Today we traveled to Lake Isabella to meet Cheryl Patchet for two days of camping. Cheryl is Dick's friend from his time at
FASPAC in San Diego.
Departing site #44 at Club Royal Oak |
It was a very quiet time |
The 149 mile
trip went from Kingsburg to Bakersfield on CA-99S, then CA-178E to Lake
Isabella. The route was simple; the
drive was challenging.
CA-99 took us
through lots of farming area. The views were
boring. An accident tied up traffic for
about ½ hour. Carol said she heard a
fluttering noise coming from the front of the car, but Dick couldn't hear it or identify it.
CA-178 was
quite exciting once we started the climb along Kern River. The grades were steep and the turns were
sharp. The check engine light came on
briefly when we got close to Lake Isabella.

It got exciting when we entered the Kern River canyon |
And curvy |
Paradise Cove Campground was a disappointment. It was very hot, had no camp host, had no grass, and looked pretty barren.

On top of the campground issues, the car engine was making troubling noises. Dick was able to find a mechanic at Gator's Auto Service in Lake Isabella. Walt the owner/mechanic determined the engine
was 4 quarts low on oil, but couldn't explain where it went. The oil was changed just before we left for the trip. We're going to check it every day until we can get into a Chevy garage.
Cheryl
arrived while Dick was having the car repaired. Her drive from Carlsbad took longer than expected.
We had a nice evening of dinner (hamburgers, corn on the cob, potato & macaroni salad, veggies and wine), visiting and stargazing.
Campground observations: the day was hot (mid-90's), the afternoon breeze was strong (over 30 mph), the evening cooled and was very pleasant, the night sky was clear, the stars were bright, and CA-178 road noise messed up our sleep.
