Today's journey of 341 miles ended at Amana, IA. The route: I-74W from Crawfordsville through most of IL to I-80W (through Champaign, Bloomington and Peoria), I-80W into IA (through Davenport and Iowa City), and US-151N to the Amana Colonies. The Fighting Illini and Iowa Hawkeyes didn't attack when we passed through their cities.
The trip had interesting sights, some excitement and a bit of humor.
IL welcomed us, IN didn't say good-bye. |
IA welcomed us, IL didn't say good-bye. Hmm, why is OH the only state to say thanks for visiting? |
Sights included many miles of gold-tasseled corn fields and wind-rippled, green velvet soybean fields. They were quite beautiful in spite of the drought.
Wind farms appeared in IL |
The weather provided the excitement. We passed through a cold front at around 2:30pm. The temperature dropped from 93 to 71 degrees in 30 minutes. Heavy rain, thunder, lightning and 50 mph winds came with the fast cool-down. It was white-knuckle towing time for a while. Fortunately, the storm had ended and the sky was clear by the time we entered IA.
We had a laugh when we saw Kamp Komfort signs as we passed Carlock, IL. We stayed there on August 10, 2009 (the 1st stop in our Southwest Trip). Later we spotted our 1st Iowa highlight ... the world's largest truckstop!
IA claims the size prize ... parking for 800 semis, 250 cars and 20 busses.. |
The Amana Colonies RV Park is quite large, but short on character in it's youth. The trees are just getting started. Their 4-star rating is about right.
They do have room for us |

We plan to visit the Amana Colonies tomorrow. See http://amanacolonies.com/pages/about-amana-colonies/history.php for details.
Hmmm... It looks like that campsite is pretty barren. No trees. Fro the picture, Carol doesn't seem to mind!
